Sabil-kuttab of Sitt Saliha
Monument Historic sabil-kuttab named after Sitt Saliha
Near Cairo’s historic quarter, the Sabil‑kuttab of Sitt Saliha marks a neighborhood fountain‑school ensemble; visitors stop to study stone carving, traditional mashrabiya screens and nearby mosques and souks.
Sabil-kuttab of Sitt Saliha is a small charitable building in Cairo’s historic al-Gamaleya district, built in the Ottoman period to combine a public water outlet with a Qur’anic primary school.
The architectural form is compact and vertical, with the sabil at street level and the kuttab occupying the upper floor, often lit by wooden screened windows. Facade details typically include carved stonework, inscriptions and decorative tile or marble panels that mark the foundation and patron. Because of the modest scale, visual interest is concentrated on the entrance and cornice.
The structure was created as a waqf to provide everyday services to the local community; like other sabil-kuttabs it has been subject to conservation work to protect its masonry and ornamentation.
Located in the medieval core of Cairo, it lies near al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street and the Khan al-Khalili area.
- Dual function: Typical sabil-kuttab design places the functional water window at street level and a small teaching room above.
- Best viewing: Exterior decoration and donor inscriptions are the main points of interest; photograph from the pavement for best results.
