Sabil-kuttab of Shahin Agha Ahmad is an Ottoman-period charitable building in Historic Cairo combining a public sabil and an upper kuttab, typical of the city’s 18th-19th century urban donations.

Architectural features include the sabil window and a modest upper room for Qur’anic instruction, with decorative external panels and calligraphy that record patronage. The monument is generally small in plan and integrated into the dense streetscape, making its facade the primary focus for visitors. The materials and detailing reflect local masonry and woodwork traditions of the period.

The sabil-kuttab was established through private endowment to serve daily charitable needs and basic education; such foundations remained functional community assets for many years and several have been treated in conservation efforts.

It stands within Historic Cairo’s al-Gamaleya area near prominent medieval streets and markets, in the central part of the city.

Positioned on al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street in Historic Cairo; approximately 5-10 minutes on foot from Bab Zuweila or Khan al-Khalili. Taxis from central Cairo (Tahrir area) are straightforward.

• Stand directly in front and watch how light plays across the carved niches-late afternoon throws deeper shadows and makes the stonework read like bas-relief.

• If interiors are locked, ask a guard or shopkeeper; many will gladly point to a doorway where original tiles or inscriptions are visible.
