Monument Historic sabil-kuttab in Cairo's medieval district

Sabil-kuttab of Nafisa al-Bayda is a small Ottoman-era sabil-kuttab located in Historic Cairo, part of the group of charitable street monuments that date mainly to the 18th and 19th centuries.
The building follows the standard sabil-kuttab plan with a ground-floor water window and an upper teaching chamber. Exterior ornament often includes carved stonework, inscription panels, and traditional window screens that signal its function and patronage. Its compact scale means architectural interest is concentrated on the facade and cornice details.
The monument was established by a private donor as a waqf for public benefit and elementary religious schooling; these endowments were a common means of social provision in Ottoman Cairo. Many such structures have been conserved in recent decades to preserve decorative stone and wooden elements.
Situated in the medieval al-Gamaleya district, it lies within the historic core of Cairo close to al-Muizz Street and the commercial quarter of Khan al-Khalili.
- Dual function: Built to serve the dual charitable roles of distributing water and teaching children the Qur'an, typical of the sabil-kuttab form.
- Best viewing: Decorative detail is concentrated on the exterior facade and entrance; photograph and inspect from the street for the best views.
