Saadani National Park
National Park Coastal national park where savannah meets the sea
On Tanzania’s east coast, Saadani National Park combines savanna wildlife with Indian Ocean shoreline; visitors take game drives and boat trips to see elephants, hippos and coastal birdlife.
Saadani National Park is a protected coastal park in eastern Tanzania that uniquely combines Indian Ocean shoreline with inland savanna and woodland habitats. The park protects a mix of beach, riverine and savanna environments and supports a range of East African wildlife.
Wildlife in the park includes species typical of Tanzanian savannas, and the protected coastal areas provide habitat for shorebirds and marine-influenced ecosystems; game drives and boat safaris are offered in appropriate park zones. The combination of beach and wildlife viewing makes Saadani distinct among Tanzanian protected areas.
The reserve was established to protect the coastal ecosystems and associated terrestrial wildlife and has been managed to allow regulated tourism alongside conservation efforts. Over time it has become known for offering both beach-based recreation and wildlife excursions.
Saadani lies in Pwani Region on Tanzania’s eastern coast, roughly between the towns of Bagamoyo and Pangani, with park boundaries running to the Indian Ocean and inland across coastal plains.
- Coastal access: Saadani is Tanzania's only national park that directly borders the Indian Ocean, offering both terrestrial wildlife viewing and beaches in the same protected area.
What to See #
- Coastal-savana interface: The park's coastline zones include beaches, tidal creeks and beachfront savanna that meet inland woodland and grassland habitats, creating coastal-safari scenery uncommon in East Africa.
How to Get to Saadani National Park #
Saadani National Park is reached by road from the nearby major city of Dar es Salaam; most visitors book a lodge transfer or private 4x4 and the drive along the coastal route via Bagamoyo takes roughly 3-4 hours depending on traffic. Several tour operators and lodges in Dar arrange pickups at hotels or at Julius Nyerere International Airport.
If you prefer public transport, take a bus or coach from Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo and then a local taxi or arranged transfer to the park entrance at Saadani village. Many camps and lodges inside or adjacent to the park will meet guests at the gate and provide the short transfer into their property.
Tips for Visiting Saadani National Park #
- Plan game drives for early morning or late afternoon when wildlife is most active and light is best for photography; many lodges will schedule drives at these times.
- Combine a land drive with a Wami River boat trip - the park's river-to-sea setting means boat safaris are the best way to find hippos, waterbirds and to experience the coastline.
- Use the park gate at Saadani village (the main access point) and consider staying overnight inside or at a nearby lodge to avoid the long same-day return to Dar es Salaam and to catch dawn/evening activity.
- Visit outside Tanzanian school holidays and peak safari weeks if you want significantly fewer safari vehicles; Saadani is much quieter than major northern parks, especially midweek.
