The Ryukyu Islands are a chain of subtropical islands stretching southwest from the Japanese main island of Kyushu toward Taiwan and forming the southernmost part of Japan. They include several distinct island groups such as the Amami, Okinawa, Miyako and Yaeyama groups and are known for coral reefs, warm seas and unique Ryukyuan culture.

Major islands include Okinawa Island, which hosts the prefecture capital Naha and the historical Shuri area, and the southern Sakishima islands, which contain remote islands like Ishigaki and Iriomote with extensive mangroves and coral systems. The archipelago supports endemic flora and fauna and a range of seascape-based tourism including diving, snorkelling and island-hopping.

Historically the islands were united as the Ryukyu Kingdom until Japan formally annexed them in 1879; they also played a decisive role in World War II during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Today they have a distinct cultural identity within Japan and are administered across multiple prefectures, primarily Okinawa Prefecture.

  • Geographic and cultural character: The archipelago stretches southwest from Kyushu toward Taiwan and is composed of several island groups with subtropical climate, coral reefs and distinct Ryukyuan cultural traditions and languages.
  • Historical significance: The islands were the center of the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until its annexation by Japan in 1879 and were the scene of major military operations in 1945, notably the Battle of Okinawa.

What to See #

  • Amami Islands: Amami Islands - the northern Ryukyu group, administered as part of Kagoshima Prefecture, with subtropical forests and endemic species.
  • Okinawa Island: Okinawa Island - the largest and most populous island, seat of the Okinawa Prefecture government and site of Naha city and the historical Ryukyu Kingdom capital at Shuri.
  • Miyako and Yaeyama islands: Miyako and Yaeyama (Sakishima) islands - the southern groups with extensive coral reefs, remote islands such as Iriomote and Ishigaki, and some of Japan's warmest climates.

How to Get to Ryukyu Islands #

The Ryukyu Islands (including Okinawa) are typically reached by air into Naha Airport (OKA) on Okinawa Island, which has frequent domestic flights from Tokyo, Osaka and other Japanese cities. From Naha Airport the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail) connects the airport with Naha city center.

Inter-island connections are by scheduled ferries and high-speed boats (and some small regional flights) from Naha Port and other island ports; services and frequencies vary by island, so check schedules for the specific Ryukyu island you plan to visit.

Tips for Visiting Ryukyu Islands #

  • Use Naha (Okinawa main island) as your hub: regular flights and ferries depart Naha for the outer Ryukyu islands, so plan connections through Naha to reduce transfer hassles.
  • Avoid Japan's peak holiday periods (Golden Week in late April-early May and the Obon period in mid‑August) and the core typhoon months (roughly August-September) if you want fewer crowds and a lower risk of cancelled ferries or flights.
  • Travel in spring (April-June) or late autumn for pleasant weather and good visibility for diving and beach activities while generally avoiding the worst of the summer heat and typhoon season.
