Ruwanweli Maha Saya (often spelled Ruwanwelisaya) is a large ancient Buddhist stupa in the sacred city of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. It was built in the 2nd century BCE and is one of the most important religious monuments in the Anuradhapura complex.
The stupa is the focal point for Buddhist worship and pilgrimage in Anuradhapura and is approached via surrounding terraces and devotional spaces. It is a major stop on pilgrimage circuits within the ancient city and attracts both local and international visitors.
King Dutugemunu is credited with commissioning the stupa in the 2nd century BCE to enshrine Buddhist relics; it has been repaired and rebuilt multiple times across the centuries. The site has continuously functioned as a place of worship and has been maintained by successive rulers and custodians.
The monument sits within the archaeological zone of Anuradhapura, in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, within the broader remains of the ancient capital. Anuradhapura is the nearest city and lies roughly 200 kilometres north of Colombo.
