Rupat is an island in Indonesia’s Riau province located off the east coast of Sumatra in the Strait of Malacca. The island is part of the Riau archipelago and is administered within Riau province.
Visitors go to Rupat for its coastal environment and local fishing communities; the island features sandy beaches, mangrove-lined coasts and rural settlements rather than large tourist infrastructure. Travel is typically by boat from mainland ports in Riau.
Historically Rupat has been used for local fishing, small-scale agriculture and as part of regional maritime routes; it has not been a major urban centre. Over time the island has remained primarily rural and connected to nearby Sumatran ports.
Rupat lies off Sumatra’s eastern shore in the Riau Islands region, close to the city of Dumai on the Sumatran coast and within the Strait of Malacca shipping corridor.
