Museum Historic Moscow museum housing 18th-century collections
The Rumyantsev Museum was established in Moscow in the early 19th century by Count Nikolay Rumyantsev as a public museum and library to house his collections of manuscripts, maps and antiquities. The institution’s holdings later formed the nucleus of larger national libraries and museums in the Soviet period.
The museum originally displayed a wide range of cultural and historical material assembled by Rumyantsev and was open to scholars and the public. After the Russian revolutions and institutional reorganizations in the early 20th century, much of the collection was integrated into state museums and the national library system.
Located in central Moscow, the museum’s collections and legacy are now preserved within larger state cultural institutions rather than as a standalone public museum under the Rumyantsev name.
