Ruma National Park

Ruma National Park is a protected area in Homa Bay County in western Kenya, established to conserve local wildlife and habitats in the Lake Victoria basin. It is best known for its role in protecting rare and locally threatened species.

The park supports populations of large mammals and a rich assemblage of birdlife; it is particularly noted for conservation of the roan antelope. Wildlife viewing is on a smaller, more intimate scale compared with Kenya’s large savannah parks and typically involves guided drives and walks.

Ruma was designated to safeguard local ecosystems and species and has been managed with a focus on habitat protection and anti-poaching. Management and conservation actions have been aimed at maintaining the park’s status as a refuge for species uncommon elsewhere in Kenya.

The park lies in Homa Bay County in western Kenya, in the wider Lake Victoria region; access is via regional roads from nearby towns and it functions as a local conservation and ecotourism area.
