Ruins of Saint Paul's
Church 17th-century church facade and Macau cultural monument
Macau’s Ruins of Saint Paul’s showcase the 17th-century stone façade of a Jesuit church and are a focal point for visitors exploring the city’s Portuguese colonial architecture, nearby Senado Square and museums.
The Ruins of Saint Paul’s are the stone façade and remaining front steps of the former 17th-century Church of Mater Dei and the adjacent Jesuit college in Macau. The façade is one of Macau’s best-known landmarks and a symbol of the city’s Portuguese colonial heritage.
Today only the granite façade and a few structural remnants survive; a small museum behind the façade interprets the site’s history. The ruins are a prominent photo spot and a focal point within Macau’s historic centre.
The church and college were constructed during the 17th century and the complex was largely destroyed by fire in the 19th century, leaving the carved stone front as the principal remnant. The site has been preserved and incorporated into the broader historic district.
The ruins occupy a hilltop location on the Macau Peninsula, a short walk from Senado Square and other historic streets in the centre of Macau.
- UNESCO site: The stone façade and adjacent flight of steps are the most photographed element and are part of the Historic Centre of Macau UNESCO World Heritage Site.
