Ruins of Gedi
Archaeological Site Coastal Swahili town ruins dating to medieval centuries
On Kenya’s north coast near Watamu, the Ruins of Gedi are a Swahili-Arab town with stone walls, a mosque and coral-built houses from the medieval period; visitors combine archaeology with forest trails and nearby beaches.
The Ruins of Gedi are the remains of a coastal Swahili town in Kilifi County, Kenya, containing stone mosques, houses and a palace complex. The settlement dates from the medieval period and is a principal example of Swahili urbanism on the Kenyan coast.
The town was established and occupied by Swahili-speaking inhabitants and Indian Ocean traders from the medieval period until about the 17th century, when it was abandoned. Archaeological work in the 20th century documented the stone architecture and artefacts that illustrate trade links across the Indian Ocean.
The site lies inland from Kenya’s north-coast towns, set near the Arabuko-Sokoke forest and within Kilifi County, accessible from coastal centres such as Malindi and Watamu.
- Dating and urban character: Occupied between roughly the 13th and 17th centuries, representing a medieval Swahili town with stone mosques, houses and a planned settlement pattern.
- Setting and wildlife: Located adjacent to the Arabuko-Sokoke coastal forest and near Kenya's Indian Ocean shoreline, the site shares habitat with diverse birdlife and small mammals that are commonly seen during visits.
What to See #
- Great Mosque: A stone mosque complex with a rectangular plan and a large open prayer area typical of Swahili urban architecture.
- Residential quarter (stone houses): A cluster of stone houses and compounds showing domestic planning and stacked room layouts from the town's occupation period.
- Palace complex: A larger, elaborate building interpreted as a ruler's house or palace, located near the centre of the site and distinguished by more complex masonry and layout.
