Ru ware
Archaeological Site Rare Chinese Song dynasty blue-green celadon pottery
A type of Song-dynasty ceramic noted for a particular bluish glaze and extreme rarity. Museums and collectors examine Ru ware to study Chinese kiln practice and imperial ceramic production.
Ru ware is a type of Chinese ceramic produced at the Ru kilns in Ruzhou, Henan during the Northern Song period; it is regarded as one of the rarest and most prized categories of Chinese ceramics.
Famous for its pale bluish-green glaze and exceptionally fine, soft quality, examples are mostly small tablewares such as bowls, dishes and brush-washers. The glaze often shows a subdued, even tone and may display a delicate crackle or fine glazing effects prized by collectors. Surviving pieces are scarce and are concentrated in national and major museum collections.
Production is associated with imperial court patronage in the Northern Song period and with kilns at Ruzhou; large-scale production ceased in the early 12th century after political upheavals. The wares are historically linked to short-lived court production rather than long-running commercial kilns.
The original kiln site is in Ruzhou, Henan province in central China, and authenticated Ru ware is mainly encountered in museum collections and specialist exhibitions rather than at an on-site visitor facility.
- Glaze and appearance: Characterised by a subtle bluish-green 'sky' or 'duck-egg' glaze and a very fine, often faintly crackled surface.
- Rarity and collections: Original pieces are extremely rare and most surviving examples are held in major museum collections worldwide.
How to Get to Ru ware #
To study Ru ware in situ, travel to museums and collections across China (Beijing, Shanghai, and provincial museums) and to Ruzhou in Henan province to see kiln archaeology. Ruzhou is reached by train from Zhengzhou; local guides can direct visitors to archaeological sites and pottery museums.
Tips for Visiting Ru ware #
- When viewing Ru ware, look for the distinctive pale blue-green glaze and 'crazing' crackle patterns - they were prized by Song dynasty connoisseurs.
- Museum labels matter: Ru ware pieces are rare and often part of rotating collections; check ahead which museums are displaying originals.
- If in Henan, combine Ru ware viewing with a trip to Ruzhou's kiln sites and local ceramic workshops to see the technical context.
Best Time to Visit Ru ware #
Ru ware is best appreciated in museum displays year-round; plan visits around exhibition schedules.
