Royal Palaces of Abomey

The Royal Palaces of Abomey are a group of palace compounds in Abomey, Benin, that served as the political and spiritual centre of the Fon Kingdom of Dahomey. The ensemble includes palace buildings, courtyards, decorated walls and sculpted bas-reliefs that document the kingdom’s history and dynastic rule.

Palace architecture is primarily earthen construction with timber elements and elaborately modelled exterior reliefs illustrating events and royal symbolism. Many palaces were built or enlarged between the 17th and 19th centuries and the site contains material culture tied to the Fon royal court.

The palaces suffered damage during military conflicts and colonial campaigns in the late 19th century but have since been the focus of preservation and museum work. The site sits within the town of Abomey in Zou Department and is the principal historic attraction in the city.
