Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz is a public square in the Mitte district of Berlin named for the socialist activist Rosa Luxemburg. It functions as a civic and cultural node in central Berlin.

The square is edged by cafés, bars and municipal buildings and is dominated by the Volksbühne theatre on its east side. The paved open space is used for public gatherings and nightlife, and the area immediately around it contains several restaurants and small cultural venues. A U-Bahn station beneath the square on line U2 provides direct metro access to central Berlin and Alexanderplatz.

The square was renamed in the 20th century to commemorate Rosa Luxemburg and has been the site of political events and cultural activity since then. The built fabric around the square includes early 20th-century civic architecture and redevelopment from different periods of Berlin’s history.

The square sits in central Berlin’s Mitte district, on the eastern side of the historic Baroque and 19th-century street grid. It lies a short walk north of Alexanderplatz and is integrated into Berlin’s central public-transport network.
