Römerberg (Frankfurt)

Römerberg is the historic market square in Frankfurt’s Altstadt and has been the city’s civic and ceremonial centre for centuries. It is flanked by the medieval Römer city hall complex and a row of reconstructed half-timbered houses that define the square’s appearance.

The square features the centrally placed Fountain of Justice (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen) and is adjacent to important landmarks such as St. Nicholas Church and the Frankfurt Cathedral within easy walking distance. The area is a focal point for events, markets and sightseeing, and is compact enough to be explored on foot in a short visit.

The Römer complex itself has been used as Frankfurt’s city hall since the early 15th century, and many surrounding buildings were rebuilt after wartime destruction to restore the historic streetscape. Over time the square has remained the ceremonial heart of Frankfurt, combining municipal functions with tourism and market activity.

Römerberg sits in central Frankfurt am Main in the state of Hesse, a short walk from the Main River and Frankfurt Cathedral, and is part of the city’s pedestrianised old town area.
