Main image

The Roman Theatre in Amman is a large ancient Roman amphitheatre carved into a hill in downtown Amman, Jordan. It dates to the Roman period and has an overall seating capacity of roughly 6,000.

The theatre’s steeply raked stone seating rises in three tiers around a circular orchestra and a partly restored stage building, offering a clear view from top to bottom. The site includes the adjacent smaller Odeon and an archaeological area that visitors often explore together. Guided walks and signs explain the layout and the scale of the structure.

Constructed during the Roman occupation of the city known then as Philadelphia, the theatre was used for performances and public gatherings in antiquity and later saw periods of decline and restoration. Modern conservation and partial restoration efforts have stabilized the stone seating and stage and allowed the theatre to be used for occasional cultural events.

Sited on Jabal al-Amman in the heart of the city, the theatre sits just south of the Roman Forum and north of the Citadel hill. It is within Amman’s central urban area and is easily reached from nearby streets and public squares.

  • Central location: Located on a hillside in central Amman, adjacent to the Roman Forum and within walking distance of the Amman Citadel.
  • Best time to visit: Best visited in early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and photographic light is softer.

What to See #

  • Odeon (small theatre): A small Roman-era performance building immediately south of the main theatre, cut into the same hillside and used historically for chamber music and civic events; seating capacity is roughly several hundred.
  • Main cavea and stage: The open-air seating area (cavea) rises in three tiers carved into the slope and faces the orchestra and stage building, with an overall seating capacity of about 6,000 people.
