The Roman Forum is the central civic, political and religious space of ancient Rome, located between the Palatine and Capitoline hills. It contains the ruins of temples, basilicas, arches and public spaces that were the focal point of Roman public life.

Notable visible remains include the Temple of Saturn, the Curia (Senate House), the Arch of Titus and the Basilica of Maxentius, among others; the site is presented as an archaeological park with paths and interpretive signage. Visitors explore layered ruins that span the Republic and Imperial eras.

The forum developed over many centuries from the early Republic through the Imperial period as Rome’s primary public square and administrative heart, then declined after antiquity and was excavated and conserved from the 19th century onward.

The ruins are in central Rome, a short walk from the Colosseum and other historic sites in the city’s archaeological core.

  • Setting and layout: The archaeological remains sit in the valley between the Palatine and Capitoline hills near the Colosseum, forming an open-air complex of ruins and excavated foundations.

How to Get to Roman Forum #

The Roman Forum is in central Rome between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. The closest metro stop is Colosseo (Line B); from Colosseo station it is a 2-5 minute walk to the Forum entrances. You can also walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali from Piazza Venezia directly to the Forum or arrive by numerous city buses that stop on or near Via dei Fori Imperiali.

Tips for Visiting Roman Forum #

  • Book a timed Colosseum-Roman Forum-Palatine ticket in advance and enter early morning through the Colosseum access point when your ticket allows; this streamlines security queues and gets you into the Forum before tour groups peak.
  • Walk the Forum first thing for softer light on the Via Sacra and far fewer people; later in the day the central routes fill with guided groups.
  • Make time for Palatine Hill and the Capitoline‑Hill viewpoints - visitors who only walk the main Forum trenches often miss the expansive views and the archaeological layers visible from those higher vantage points.
