Rodna National Park is a protected area in northern Romania that conserves a large portion of the Rodna Mountains in the Eastern Carpathians. The park protects alpine landscapes, mountain peaks and glacial landforms characteristic of this section of the Carpathians.

Visitors come for high-mountain hiking, glacial lakes and mountain ridgelines, with trails leading into alpine meadows and cirques. Wildlife observation and scenic mountain landscapes are principal attractions within the park.

The area was brought under formal protection to conserve its high-mountain ecosystems and geological features and has been managed to balance conservation with traditional pastoral use and recreation. Over time protections have been developed to safeguard habitats and species while allowing regulated visitor access.

Rodna National Park lies in northern Romania within the Maramureș-Bistrița region of the Eastern Carpathians. The park covers high mountain terrain with steep ridges and valleys and is accessed from mountain towns that serve as gateways for hiking and mountaineering.

  • Alpine environment: Contains alpine terrain with glacial cirques and high-altitude lakes, offering habitats for species such as chamois and large carnivores typical of the Carpathians.

Tips for Visiting Rodna National Park #

  • Visit Rodna National Park in the shoulder seasons (late June-early September) and start hikes early in the morning to maximize clear mountain views and avoid afternoon cloud build-up on the ridges.
  • If you plan to aim for the park's highest point, Pietrosul Rodnei, allow a full day and begin well before midday - the ridge routes are exposed and conditions can change quickly; check local trail notices before setting out.
  • Many visitors stick to the main ridgelines; make time for the side trails down to the glacial tarns (the Lala lakes) below the peaks - they offer quieter scenery and alpine wildflowers that are easily missed from the high routes.
