Rockingham Forest
Area Ancient royal hunting forest and wooded landscape
Rockingham Forest, once a royal hunting ground in Northamptonshire, now offers walking trails through oak woodland, sandstone outcrops and small villages showing traditional countryside character.
Rockingham Forest is a historic Royal forest in north Northamptonshire in England with medieval origins and surviving areas of mixed woodland. It is nationally noted as a named former royal hunting forest and as a landscape shaped by centuries of parkland and timber management.
Woodland pockets, rides and parkland are the main attractions, with waymarked footpaths, cycling routes and equestrian tracks. Remaining ancient woodland supports veteran trees and seasonal displays of bluebells; open rides and ridgelines offer views across adjacent farmland. The landscape is used for managed timber production as well as informal recreation.
The area was established as a royal hunting forest in the medieval period and remained a designated forest under successive monarchs; its extent was gradually reduced by clearance and enclosure over several centuries. Estate parks, castlelands and later forestry management altered the forest pattern, leaving surviving fragments and managed plantations.
Geographically it lies in north Northamptonshire around the villages of Rockingham and nearby towns such as Corby and Kettering, set within rolling farmland and pockets of ancient woodland. The forest area surrounds and includes the grounds of Rockingham Castle and its adjacent village.
- Bluebells: Extensive bluebell displays appear in spring across remaining ancient woodland pockets, with the best displays typically in April and early May.
- Access and trails: Terrain is a mix of managed plantation and ancient semi-natural woodland with waymarked public footpaths and bridleways suitable for walking and cycling.
What to See #
- Rockingham Castle: Sits around the historic **Rockingham Castle**, a Norman stronghold that overlooks parts of the forest and village; the castle is a visible focal point for many walks.
