The cathedral’s West Front presents three large Norman arches and is often cited as one of England’s best-preserved Romanesque façades. Inside, the long nave and choir combine Norman and medieval Gothic elements with later Victorian restoration work, and there are several notable tombs and memorials.

The site originated as an early monastery in the Anglo-Saxon period and developed into a major Benedictine abbey before the Norman rebuilding in the 12th century; it became a cathedral following the English Reformation.
