Rockefeller Center
Building Art Deco complex with observation deck and studios
Midtown Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center offers the Top of the Rock observation deck, seasonal ice rink, and Art Deco plazas; visitors come for city views, NBC tours and nearby museums.
Rockefeller Center is a large commercial complex in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, developed by the Rockefeller family during the 1930s. It comprises a cluster of office buildings, entertainment venues and public spaces occupying a multi-block site between 48th and 51st Streets.
Key visitor attractions include the Radio City Music Hall theatre, the Channel Gardens and lower plaza with its seasonal ice rink, and the Top of the Rock observation decks in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The complex hosts corporate offices, broadcast studios and retail spaces and functions as a civic gathering place for events and public art.
Construction took place in the 1930s as a coordinated urban development project and the centre has been modified and modernised over the decades while retaining many original Art Deco interiors and public artworks. It remains an active commercial and cultural hub in midtown Manhattan.
Rockefeller Center sits in central Manhattan between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, roughly midway between Central Park and the East River, with extensive subway and bus connections and pedestrian access from surrounding streets.
- Size: The complex covers about 22 acres in Midtown Manhattan and was built in stages during the 1930s as a large mixed-use urban development.
- Traditions: A seasonal ice-skating rink and the annual lighting of a large Christmas tree on the lower plaza are high-profile public traditions at the site.
What to See #
- 30 Rockefeller Plaza: The centerpiece office tower that houses broadcast studios and corporate offices; its concourse contains shops and links to the complex's public spaces.
- Radio City Music Hall: A large indoor theatre opened in 1932 that is home to major entertainment productions and the annual Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes.
- Channel Gardens and lower plaza: An outdoor promenade and formal gardens aligned between Fifth Avenue and 30 Rockefeller Plaza that form the pedestrian axis of the complex and lead to the lower plaza.
- Top of the Rock: An observation deck on the tower that offers direct views of Midtown Manhattan, Central Park to the north and the Empire State Building to the south.
How to Get to Rockefeller Center #
Rockefeller Center is in Midtown Manhattan between 48th and 51st Streets along Fifth Avenue. Take the NYC Subway B, D, F or M trains to 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Center (the station exits directly at the plaza); the E and other Midtown lines are a short walk away as well.

Tips for Visiting Rockefeller Center #
- Buy timed-entry tickets for Top of the Rock online and choose the earliest available slot to avoid long lines and enjoy clearer morning light for photos of the Empire State and Central Park.
- Visit the Channel Gardens and concourse before the crowds swell-early weekday mornings are the quietest for walking the complex and seeing the art and plaza without tour groups.
- If you plan the NBC Studio Tour or an observation-deck visit, book each separately in advance and allow extra time between activities; security checks and merchandise queues can create delays.
Best Time to Visit Rockefeller Center #
Avoid late-November through early January if you want to skip the biggest crowds; spring and early fall are best for fewer visitors.
