Rock of Gibraltar
Mountain Iconic limestone promontory with wild Barbary macaques
The Rock of Gibraltar is a limestone promontory overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar; tourists ride the cable car, visit St Michael’s Cave, see the Barbary macaques and walk historic military tunnels.
The Rock of Gibraltar is a limestone promontory at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula and is the defining feature of the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. Its summit reaches 426 metres above sea level and the territory covers about 6.7 square kilometres.
The site’s Upper Rock Nature Reserve contains walking paths, viewpoints, military tunnels and the colony of wild Barbary macaques, which are a well-known attraction. St Michael’s Cave is a show cave with formed chambers open to guided visits, and the Great Siege Tunnels illustrate the Rock’s long military history.
Gibraltar has held strategic importance for centuries as the gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and has extensive military fortifications dating to various historical periods. The Rock’s tunnels and batteries reflect its role in successive sieges and 20th-century defence planning.
Positioned at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is immediately north of the Strait of Gibraltar and borders Spain to the north; the Rock overlooks the entrance to the Mediterranean from the Atlantic.

How to Get to Rock of Gibraltar #
The Rock of Gibraltar is in the Gibraltar territory and is reached from Gibraltar town (Casemates/Main Street) by a short walk or taxi. The Gibraltar Cable Car, whose lower station is close to the Alameda Gardens/Grand Casemates area, takes visitors partway up the rock; many visitors also walk up from the town (steep paths and roads). If arriving from Spain, you can cross the land border at La Línea and then walk or take a short taxi ride into Gibraltar.
Tips for Visiting Rock of Gibraltar #
- Take the earliest cable‑car or arrive on the Rock in the morning to avoid the large cruise‑ship influx that swamps viewpoints and attractions midday.
- Carry a passport and expect border controls if you cross into Gibraltar from Spain by land-queues at the border can become long during peak times, so plan extra time for crossings.
- Keep a safe distance from the Barbary macaques, secure loose belongings and never feed them-these monkeys are a famous attraction but can become aggressive if given food.
Best Time to Visit Rock of Gibraltar #
Aim for spring or autumn for comfortable conditions and fewer tourists while exploring the Rock and its viewpoints.
