The Rock Garden of Chandigarh is a large open-air sculpture park in Chandigarh, India, created by Nek Chand from reused and recycled materials. It occupies irregular terraces and courtyards and is one of the city’s most visited cultural attractions.

The park contains thousands of sculptures and mosaics made from ceramic, stone and industrial waste arranged across roughly 40 acres; its scale and use of found materials are defining characteristics. The layout links a series of themed courtyards, waterfalls and paved terraces.

The garden was constructed clandestinely beginning in 1957 and later regularized and opened to the public; it remains a key example of outsider art turned civic landmark.

It sits near Sukhna Lake within Chandigarh’s city area and is accessible from the city centre.

  • Founding and scale: Created and built privately by Nek Chand starting in 1957, the garden covers roughly 40 acres and contains over 2,000 sculptures made from recycled materials.
  • Location and access: The garden is adjacent to Sukhna Lake and is part of Chandigarh's planned city core, making it easily reached from central Chandigarh.

What to See #

  • Main garden complex: A sequence of interconnected courtyards and terraces filled with sculptures, mosaics and recycled-material installations that form the main visitor circuit across the park.
  • Open-air sculpture courtyards: Open-air galleries and secluded courtyards where thousands of human and animal figures made from broken ceramics, glass and building waste are displayed along pathways and steps.
