Roanoke Island
Island Barrier island with the Lost Colony settlement history
Roanoke Island draws visitors for the Lost Colony historic sites, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and interpretive displays, Outer Banks beaches and ferry-accessible inlets with local seafood traditions.
Roanoke Island is an island in coastal North Carolina, United States, situated between the mainland and the barrier islands of the Outer Banks. It is most widely known for its association with the late 16th-century English attempts to establish a colony and the disappearance of the 1587 settlement known as the ‘Lost Colony.’
The island contains the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, interpretive trails and museum exhibits that interpret the English voyages, indigenous Algonquin-speaking peoples, and subsequent colonial history. The Roanoke Island Festival Park and the waterfront town of Manteo provide visitor services, museums and displays about maritime and colonial life.
English colonial expeditions established temporary and permanent settlements on and around the island in the 1580s; the 1587 group led by John White left and returned to find the settlement abandoned, a mystery that has persisted in historical study and archaeology. Later centuries saw continued habitation and development, and the site has been the subject of archaeological investigation and public interpretation.
Geographically the island lies between Albemarle Sound and the Outer Banks barrier islands on North Carolina’s northeastern coast and is connected to the mainland and neighbouring barrier islands by bridges and causeways. The town of Manteo is the island’s main population centre and visitor base.
- Lost Colony site and archaeology: The island is the site of the 1587 English 'Lost Colony' attempt; archaeological work and historic interpretation at Fort Raleigh focus on that period.
- Long-running outdoor drama: An outdoor historical drama about the Lost Colony has been performed on Roanoke Island since the 1930s, typically staged during the summer season.
What to See #
- Fort Raleigh National Historic Site: The national historic site that preserves the sites associated with early English colonists, including earthworks and interpretive trails with a visitor centre and exhibits.
- Roanoke Island Festival Park: A riverfront museum and living-history complex focused on the island's maritime and colonial past, with reconstructed vessels and an on-site museum.
- Town of Manteo: The principal settlement on the island that serves as the island's administrative and service centre, containing galleries, shops and accommodation.
How to Get to Roanoke Island #
Roanoke Island is reached by road from mainland North Carolina via US Route 64/264 into Manteo, the island’s principal town. From regional hubs (for example Raleigh or Norfolk) drive east on the US highways toward the Outer Banks; once in Manteo most attractions (town center, Fort Raleigh, Elizabethan Gardens) are a short drive or walk from central parking and ferry/boat access points.
Tips for Visiting Roanoke Island #
- Base yourself in Manteo to reach the island's main attractions: Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and the Elizabethan Gardens are adjacent and provide the best introduction to the island's history.
- Visit in spring or fall to avoid summer heat and peak tourist crowds-many programs and outdoor exhibits run seasonally, so check schedules for reenactments or garden tours.
- Don't skip nearby Roanoke Island Festival Park and its exhibits; it's within easy distance of Manteo and often overlooked by visitors focused only on the Lost Colony sites.
