How to Get to Rømø #
Rømø in southern Denmark is connected to the mainland by a causeway (Rømødæmningen) and is reached by road - drive to the island via the causeway to the main town of Havneby. The island is served by regional buses from nearby towns (for example Esbjerg and Ribe); driving from Esbjerg to Rømø is roughly a 30-40 minute drive depending on route and traffic. Once on the island most sites are short drives from Havneby with parking near beaches and villages.
Tips for Visiting Rømø #
- Cross to Rømø early in the morning via the causeway (Rømødæmningen) to avoid peak summer traffic and to secure beach parking at popular spots like Lakolk.
- Head to the island's west coast and drive out onto the wide, hard-packed Nordstrand at low tide for expansive beach space - the broad tidal flats are Rømø's defining feature and less crowded early or late in the day.
- Visit outside Danish school summer holidays (late July) or go early/late in the day in high season to avoid the main family crowds at Lakolk and Kommandørgården.
- Explore the quieter north and inland salt marshes and birdwatching areas - many visitors stay on the southern resort strip and miss the island's nature-rich interiors.
