How to Get to Rjukan
Rjukan is best reached by road from Oslo or via regional buses from Kongsberg/Notodden; there is no direct current mainline passenger train into the town. Buses and car transfers are the typical ways to arrive and get around the valley.
Oslo Gardermoen (OSL): The main international airport for Norway; from Oslo to Rjukan expect about a 3-4 hour drive. There are organized coach services (seasonal and scheduled) from Oslo and Kongsberg that serve Rjukan, with journey times typically around 3-4 hours.
Sandefjord-Torp (TRF): An alternative low-cost airport for southern Norway; travel to Rjukan from Torp is usually by a longer combination of coach and/or car (around 3-4+ hours) depending on connections.
Train: There is no direct mainline train to Rjukan; the historic Rjukan Line (Rjukanbanen) is no longer a regular passenger rail link. Nearest mainline rail services run to Kongsberg or Notodden; from these towns you continue by bus or car.
Bus: Regular long-distance coaches and local buses link Rjukan with Kongsberg, Notodden and Oslo (operators include Vy and local carriers). Bus transfers from Kongsberg/Notodden typically take around 1-2 hours depending on origin.
How to Get Around Rjukan #
Rjukan’s centre is compact but built into steep terrain, so be prepared for uphill walks; many main sites are reachable on foot if you’re reasonably fit. Local buses connect Rjukan with Notodden and surrounding communities, and regional coach services run to larger hubs. Having a car helps for exploring trails and nearby attractions; during winter, check schedules for lifts and buses. Costs for buses are comparable to other Norwegian regional routes and are higher than in many continental European countries.
