Risco Caído

Risco Caído is an archaeological and ceremonial complex on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain, notable for rock-cut sanctuaries and cave dwellings used by the island’s pre-Hispanic inhabitants. The site forms part of a broader cultural landscape of mountain sanctuaries and inhabited caves.

Key features include carved caves and stone structures set into steep volcanic terrain, with evidence of ritual use and a landscape organised around sacred peaks. The location is studied for its spatial organisation and connections to prehistoric islander lifeways rather than for monumental architecture.

The area was created and used by Gran Canaria’s indigenous communities before European contact and was documented and excavated by archaeologists in the 20th and 21st centuries. Research has highlighted the site’s role in ritual practice and in seasonal settlement patterns.

Risco Caído sits within the central mountainous interior of Gran Canaria, in a rugged volcanic landscape. It is accessed by mountain roads and trails from nearby inland villages and is managed as an archaeological and cultural heritage area.
