Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve
Nature Reserve UNESCO biosphere reserve protecting tropical rainforest and indigenous communities
A UNESCO biosphere reserve on Honduras’s Mosquito Coast, the Río Plátano comprises remote rainforest, river canoeing, rich biodiversity and indigenous Miskito and Pech communities accessed via guided expeditions.
The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is a large protected area in northeastern Honduras that preserves extensive lowland tropical rainforest and river systems. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its biological diversity and intact tropical ecosystems.
The reserve contains primary rainforest, floodplain wetlands and a network of rivers including the Río Plátano, supporting rich biodiversity and endemic species. Indigenous Miskito, Pech and other communities live within and around the reserve and maintain traditional use of parts of the territory.
Protection and management have aimed to balance conservation with indigenous livelihoods, though the reserve faces ongoing pressures from illegal logging, cattle ranching and limited infrastructure. Scientific surveys and conservation projects have documented species richness and cultural values.
Geographically, the reserve is in the Mosquitia region of northeastern Honduras, opening to the Caribbean coast; it is remote with limited road access and is most commonly reached by river or small aircraft from towns such as Puerto Lempira.
- UNESCO World Heritage: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 for its extensive lowland tropical rainforest and cultural values tied to indigenous communities.
How to Get to Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve #
The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is remote and requires organized transport: common access is by small charter aircraft or by multi‑day boat from coastal towns (for example La Ceiba or Puerto Lempira) into the Mosquitia region.
Entry into the reserve typically requires a guided trip or local operator - independent travel is not practical due to limited roads and conservation controls.
Tips for Visiting Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve #
- Visit during the dry season (roughly December-April) when river levels and trails are more navigable; access during the rainy season can be slow or hazardous by river.
- Only enter the reserve with an authorized local operator or guide-most access routes are by river or small plane from La Mosquitia/La Ceiba and permits and community coordination are required.
- Include community visits to Miskito villages in your itinerary; many visitors focus solely on wildlife and miss the cultural history and guided community-led walks that explain land stewardship and local traditions.
