Main image

Río Bec is a Late Classic Maya archaeological site in the state of Campeche, Mexico, noted for its distinctive towered temple-pyramids. The site lent its name to the Río Bec architectural style, recognizable across the central Maya lowlands.

The complex is dominated by a series of temple-pyramids with narrow, tapering false towers and steep façades; many towers are decorative rather than functional. Travelers encounter a central plaza enclosed by residential and ceremonial buildings, plus a ballcourt and residential ranges typical of a regional civic-ceremonial center.

Constructed during the Late Classic period by Maya communities in the Río Bec region, the site functioned as a local ceremonial center and habitation complex. It was abandoned during the widespread declines in the Terminal Classic period, leaving the masonry core that survives today.

Río Bec lies in southeastern Campeche within the central Maya lowlands, in a region characterized by low forested karst terrain and other nearby Classic-period sites. Access is by road from regional towns and archaeological-tour routes in the area.

  • Architectural significance: The site's distinctive architectural language - the Río Bec style - gives its name to regional decorative and structural features seen at multiple contemporary sites across the central Maya lowlands.
  • Date and condition: Most construction dates to the Late Classic period, broadly in the 7th-10th centuries AD; many buildings are unrestored or partially restored, so visitor access varies by structure.

What to See #

  • Twin-tower temple complexes: Twin-tower temple complexes featuring tapering, false towers that are emblematic of the Río Bec architectural style; these structures emphasize vertical, nonfunctional tower forms attached to temple-pyramids.
  • Central plaza: A central plaza area framed by residential and administrative buildings typical of Late Classic Maya civic-ceremonial centers, where public rituals and circulation took place.
  • Ballcourt: A small ballcourt located within the site, characteristic of Maya sites and used for the Mesoamerican ballgame.
