How to Get to Rila#
Rila (Kyustendil Province) is usually reached overland from Sofia by bus or train to Kyustendil, then by local bus or taxi for the final short leg. Sofia Airport (SOF) is the main entry point for international travellers.
Sofia Airport (SOF): Sofia is the main international gateway for western Bulgaria. From SOF take bus or metro to Sofia Central Station or the central bus station (30-50 minutes, ~BGN 1.60-4 / ~€1-2) then an intercity bus or train to Kyustendil; trips to Kyustendil are about 1.5-2 hours and cost around BGN 6-12 (~€3-6). From Kyustendil a local taxi or bus covers the short hop to Rila town.
Sofia (domestic flights not common): There are no major regular domestic flights serving Rila directly; flying to Sofia and continuing by road transport is the standard approach.
Train: Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) runs services from Sofia to Kyustendil (journey ~2-2.5 hours on local trains). Trains can be slower than buses but are inexpensive; check timetables as services are less frequent.
Bus: Intercity buses from Sofia Central Bus Station to Kyustendil are regular and usually faster than trains (about 1.5-2 hours, fare ~BGN 6-12). From Kyustendil local buses or taxis will get you to Rila town or the Rila monastery area if that is your destination.
How to Get Around Rila#
Public buses are the most efficient way from Sofia to Kyustendil and then to Rila, with trains as a cheaper albeit slower option. For exploring the Rila region and national park a rental car or private transfer provides the most flexibility.
- Train (BGN 4-12 (€2-6)) - BDZ trains link Sofia with Kyustendil and other regional towns. Trains are inexpensive but can be slower than coaches; they are useful if you prefer a scenic, leisurely journey. Buy tickets at stations or via BDZ services.
- Intercity Bus (BGN 6-12 (€3-6)) - Buses from Sofia to Kyustendil are frequent and usually the fastest public option. Coaches depart from Sofia Central Bus Station and drop you in Kyustendil where local buses or taxis can complete the trip to Rila. Tickets are sold at the station or online for major carriers.
- Local Bus & Minibus (BGN 1.50-6 (€0.80-3)) - Local buses or minibuses connect Kyustendil with nearby villages, including Rila; services are inexpensive but may have limited schedules. For remote stops a taxi may be quicker and sometimes only slightly more expensive.
- Taxi & Private Transfer (€10-60) - Taxis provide reliable door-to-door service from Kyustendil or Sofia for the final leg; agree the fare upfront or use an app where available. Transfers from Sofia typically cost more (expect €40+ for private transfers) while local short rides are modest.
- Car rental (€25-60/day) - Hiring a car is recommended if you want to explore Rila National Park or move between dispersed sites. Roads are generally good; winter conditions in higher areas require caution. Rentals start around €25-50/day depending on season.
- Walking - Within the small town and around nearby attractions walking is straightforward and often the most pleasant way to move around. For mountainous trails bring appropriate gear and check local conditions.
