About Rikugi-en Gardens#
Rikugien is a classical Edo‑period strolling garden in Bunkyō, Tokyo, created at the end of the 17th century and finished in the early 18th century as a landscaped composition around a central pond. It is a municipal garden notable for its compact design, scenic viewpoints and traditional tea houses.
The layout centres on a large pond with an island and a circuit of winding paths that pass artificial hills, carefully placed stones and teahouse pavilions; the composition was designed to create framed views and to evoke scenes from classical Japanese poetry. Typical visitor activities include short walks around the pond, viewing seasonal blossoms and visiting the tea houses.
The garden was laid out by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu in the late 1600s and later became designated and managed as a public garden by Tokyo; it is recognized for its historical garden design and preserved Edo‑period features. Many of the garden’s structures and plantings have been maintained or restored to reflect the original plan.
Rikugien sits in northern Tokyo near Komagome Station in Bunkyō ward, within easy reach of central Tokyo by public transport. The surrounding area is urban, but the garden provides a quiet, enclosed landscape distinct from the city streets.
- Size and management: The garden covers roughly 8.8 hectares and is managed as a Tokyo metropolitan garden open to the public year‑round.
- Seasonal illumination: Seasonal highlights are spring cherry blossoms and autumn maples, with nighttime illumination events commonly staged during peak seasons.
What to See#
- Central pond and island: Central pond and island around which the garden’s paths and artificial hills are arranged, forming the main visual focus of the landscape composition.
- Tea houses and pavilions: Tea houses and viewing pavilions placed at designed viewpoints for framed views of the pond and surrounding plantings.
- Promenade paths and hills: Network of winding paths and artificial hills arranged to represent carefully composed scenes; paths provide short circular walks linking the garden’s major viewpoints.

Tips for Visiting Rikugi-en Gardens#
- Enter via Komagome Station (JR Yamanote/Suburban lines) and head to the south gate-the tour route around the pond is clockwise and most guides recommend following it that way.
- Bring coin for the small teahouse offerings; the Meiji-era garden design is best seen slowly, ideally while seated by the main pond.
- Don't rush past the azalea terraces-late April to early May they can be surprisingly quiet and intensely colourful.

Late March-May and October-November are the best times for peak garden colours. Weekday mornings are the least crowded.
