Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls is a high-volume waterfall on the High Rhine in northern Switzerland, noted as one of the largest waterfalls in Europe by discharge. It presents a broad curtain of water with accessible viewing points and boat services that approach the falls.

Viewing platforms on both banks and terraces at the nearby castle provide a range of close and panoramic views of the main curtain, which is about 23 metres high and approximately 150 metres wide. Seasonal boat services operate from riverside landings to a rock close to the falls, offering dramatic perspectives and spray-filled approaches when conditions permit.

The site is equipped with visitor facilities, marked footpaths and interpretation; short walks along the river reveal different angles and photographic opportunities. The falls are busiest in summer and at mid-day when excursion boats and tour groups concentrate at the main viewpoints.

The falls have been a regional landmark for centuries and were harnessed for local industry and power in modern times; their tourism role expanded with improved access and the preservation of adjacent castle grounds. Infrastructure such as viewing platforms and boat landings has been added to accommodate visitors while protecting riverbanks.

The falls are located near the town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall in the canton of Schaffhausen, on the High Rhine; they are within driving distance of the city of Schaffhausen and about 50 km north of Zürich.
