Schloss Laufen is a castle complex perched on the cliff immediately above the Rhine Falls in northeastern Switzerland. It functions today as a visitor facility and viewing point for one of Europe’s largest waterfalls by discharge.

From the castle terraces and adjacent platforms visitors can see the Rhine Falls and the steep rocky gorge below; the falls are about 23 m high and reach roughly 150 m across at high flow. The site includes an on-site visitor centre with exhibitions, a restaurant and paved walkways that lead to riverside viewing points and the boat landing used for short excursions to the rock in the falls.

The site has medieval origins and the castle has been altered and restored over many centuries; it has long been associated with control of the river crossing and later developed as a visitor attraction as the Rhine Falls became a tourist destination.

The castle sits directly adjacent to the Rhine Falls near the town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall in northeastern Switzerland, overlooking the Rhine gorge and easily reached from the surrounding towns and regional transport links.

From Zürich, take the S-Bahn S9 or regional train to Neuhausen am Rheinfall (about 50 minutes); the station is a 10-15 minute walk to the castle. From Schaffhausen, regional trains run frequently (10-15 minutes). By car, follow signs for Rheinfall/Neuhausen am Rheinfall and park at the official lots near the visitor centre.

• Use the lift from the visitor centre to get the best views of the Rhine Falls and the castle terraces - it saves a steep scramble and a lot of soggy shoe leather.
• Arrive late afternoon (after 4pm) to catch the light on the falls and avoid midday tour-bus peaks.
• Bring a waterproof layer; spray from the Rhine Falls reaches the lower terraces even on calm days.
• The castle restaurant and terrace fill at lunchtime - reserve ahead for weekend meals if possible.
