Republic Square, Yerevan

Republic Square is the principal central square in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, known for its large open plaza and surrounding government and cultural buildings. The square functions as the city’s ceremonial and civic centre and is a frequent gathering place for events and public ceremonies.

Architect Alexander Tamanian’s city plan shaped the square and its surrounding façades, which include the Government House and the combined National Gallery and History Museum. The square’s central fountains are used for scheduled light and music displays that are popular with visitors.

The square was developed in the 1920s-1930s as part of Yerevan’s Soviet-era redesign and has been remodelled and pedestrianised in later decades to emphasise its role as an urban civic space. Buildings around the square date from the early to mid-20th century and reflect neoclassical and Soviet monumental styles.

Republic Square sits in the heart of Yerevan’s central district, adjacent to northern parts of the city’s main commercial streets and a short walk from the Cascade and Opera areas; it is easily accessible by public transport from across the city.
