Rehman Dheri Archaeological Site

Rehman Dheri is an archaeological mound site in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, recognized as one of the earliest urbanized settlements in South Asia dating to the third millennium BCE. Excavations have revealed a planned layout with a raised citadel and adjoining lower settlement areas.

The site was occupied in the pre-Harappan to early Harappan periods and shows evidence of organized town planning, craft production and regional trade connections. Archaeological excavations in the mid-20th century documented its layout and material culture and established its importance for studies of early South Asian urban development.

Rehman Dheri lies near the modern region around Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The mound is set on a raised position above surrounding plains and is reached via regional roads from nearby towns.

• Early urbanism: One of the earliest planned urban sites in South Asia, excavations revealed a raised citadel, a regular street layout and baked-brick architecture dating to the third millennium BCE.

• Citadel: The elevated citadel is the fortified core of the site, visible as a raised earthen mound that housed administrative and ceremonial structures in the town plan.
• Lower town: The lower town surrounds the citadel and shows evidence of a planned street grid and organized domestic and craft areas dating to the pre-Harappan period.

Located near Dera Ismail Khan region; access by road from nearby towns with local transport. Visitors should arrange permissions and guided access through regional archaeological authorities.

• Bring plenty of water and sun protection; the site is in a semi-arid region with little shade.
• Visit with a knowledgeable archaeologist or guide to interpret the ruined mounds and artifact contexts.
• Road access can be rough - a 4x4 and local driver are recommended.
