Ratu Boko
Monument Archaeological hilltop complex near Yogyakarta with ruins
An archaeological hilltop complex near Yogyakarta with terraces, gates and scattered stone ruins; visitors come at sunset for views, to study Hindu-Buddhist remains and to combine the visit with nearby Prambanan.
Ratu Boko is an archaeological complex on a plateau in Central Java, Indonesia, generally dated to the Central Javanese period (roughly 8th to 10th centuries). It is often described as a palace-fortress or a high-status settlement rather than a single temple.
Surviving gateways, terraces, stone walls, bathing installations, and scattered shrine foundations that show both Hindu and Buddhist architectural influences. The elevated position gives expansive views across the Prambanan plain and makes sunset visits popular for scenery rather than for in-situ monumental sculpture.
Archaeologists attribute the remains to Central Javanese polities of the 8th to 10th centuries and interpret the site as a fortified residential or ceremonial complex rather than a single religious monument. Excavation and conservation work in the 20th and 21st centuries clarified the layout and chronology of the remains.
Ratu Boko sits on a limestone plateau just south of the Prambanan temple compound and southeast of Yogyakarta city. The site is reached by road from Yogyakarta and lies within the wider cultural landscape of Central Java’s classical-period monuments.
