Rara National Park
National Park High-altitude Nepal park containing pristine Rara Lake
Remote protected area in Nepal’s Karnali region centered on Rara Lake, Nepal’s largest lake; attracts trekkers for high-altitude routes, lakeside camps, and alpine scenery.
Rara National Park is a protected area in Karnali Pradesh in northwest Nepal, established in 1976 to conserve the local high‑mountain environment. The park is best known for the central mountain lake and surrounding alpine terrain.
The park’s main highlight is the glacial lake at its center, which lies at high altitude and is ringed by forest and ridgelines; the lake and short network of trails offer trekking, birdwatching and scenic viewpoints. Wildlife in the park includes montane mammals and a variety of alpine and subalpine bird species, though trails are generally the prime visitor focus.
The park was created by the Government of Nepal in 1976 to protect the lake basin and surrounding habitats; management since then has focused on balancing local pastoral use with conservation and low‑impact tourism. Visitor facilities remain small scale and concentrated around the lake.
Rara National Park sits in the remote far northwest of Nepal’s Karnali region in the western Himalaya. The park is accessed by long overland routes from nearby district towns and by trekking from the nearest roadheads; terrain is mountainous and sparsely populated.
- Visiting season: Best visited between late spring and early autumn when trails are generally free of snow and lodges around the lake operate.
- Altitude note: High elevation means cold nights year round; allow extra time for acclimatization and pack warm clothing.
What to See #
- Rara Lake: A high‑altitude oligotrophic lake at the heart of the park, sitting at about 2,990 meters above sea level and forming the park's main attraction for trekking and wildlife viewing.
Tips for Visiting Rara National Park #
- Aim for mid-October to November or late March to April for the clearest skies and driest trekking conditions around Rara Lake; avoid the monsoon months (June-September) when trails and access roads can be unreliable.
- Allow extra travel time - Rara is remote: typical approaches involve a domestic flight to Jumla or long road travel, so plan connections and an extra day for delays rather than trying to reach the park same-day on tight schedules.
- Make time for a lakeside stay and short walks around the shore at sunset; many visitors treat Rara as a single stop, but the best light and wildlife viewing happen in the quieter hours around the lake.
Best Time to Visit Rara National Park #
Best in autumn (Sept-Nov) or spring (Mar-May) for clear weather and trekking; avoid the monsoon and deep winter for accessibility reasons.
