Lake Manasarovar

Lake Manasarovar is a high-altitude freshwater lake in western Tibet, located in Ngari Prefecture near the sacred peak Mount Kailash. It is an important pilgrimage site for Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and is noted for its spiritual associations.

Pilgrims and visitors are drawn to the lake for ritual bathing and the surrounding pilgrimage routes; clear views of the nearby mountains and open shoreline attract photographers and religious travellers. The lake lies in a sparsely populated high plateau environment where services are limited and travel conditions are austere.

The lake has been part of Himalayan religious geography for centuries and features in scriptural traditions across South and Central Asia. It has long been integrated into pilgrimage circuits that include Mount Kailash and neighbouring sacred places.

Geographically Manasarovar sits on the Tibetan Plateau in western Tibet, within Ngari Prefecture, at high elevation in a remote part of the Himalayan region. It is some distance from larger Tibetan towns and lies west of the main Tibetan interior.

• Access and altitude: At high altitude and in a remote part of western Tibet, travel requires acclimatisation, permits for foreign visitors and usually organised logistics from the town of Ngari or nearby Tibetan travel hubs.
• Religious significance: Regarded as sacred in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, many pilgrims bathe in the lake's waters and perform circumambulations of nearby sacred peaks during pilgrimage seasons.
