Rara Lake

Rara Lake is Nepal’s largest natural lake, located in the remote mid-west of the country within Karnali Pradesh and set at approximately 2,990 metres above sea level. It is the centerpiece of Rara National Park and is noted for its clear blue water and surrounding conifer forests.

The lake and park provide marked trails for walking and birdwatching, viewpoints around the shoreline and a small concentration of basic visitor accommodations at the lakeside. Recreation focuses on hiking, nature observation and photography rather than intensive facilities.

Rara formed in a glacial or tectonic basin and has long been a focus of local settlement and seasonal use; the area was designated for protection to conserve the lake’s ecosystems and highland species. Park status limits development and concentrates visitor activity on established trails and lakeside areas.

The lake sits in the Mugu district of northwestern Nepal, in a mountainous, sparsely populated region several days by road and foot from Nepal’s major cities; access is commonly via regional roads and trekking approaches.
