Raqqada
Archaeological Site Archaeological site of Aghlabid capital near Kairouan
Outside Kairouan, Raqqada preserves Aghlabid-era palace ruins and a museum of Islamic art. Visitors study mosaics, carved stonework and the layout of an early medieval North African administrative center.
Raqqada is the site of an early medieval Aghlabid palace city near Kairouan in central Tunisia, established in the 9th century. It served as a royal residence and administrative centre for the Aghlabid dynasty and is an important archaeological complex for early Islamic North Africa.
Visible remains include palace foundations, a congregational mosque footprint and domestic-urban structures, plus substantial archaeological collections displayed in an on-site museum. The site illustrates urban planning and monumental architecture associated with an Aghlabid capital outside Kairouan.
Raqqada was founded in the 9th century as a residence for Aghlabid rulers and functioned as a political and administrative centre through that period; it was eventually abandoned and partly dismantled in later centuries. Systematic excavations in the 20th century exposed the palace areas and recovered mosaics and architectural elements now preserved in the museum.
The ruins and museum lie a short distance south-west of the modern city of Kairouan in the Kairouan Governorate of central Tunisia. The site forms part of the region’s wider early Islamic heritage landscape.
- On-site museum: A small museum on site houses many of the mosaics and artefacts recovered during excavations, offering context for the visible ruins.
- Visiting context: The site lies close to the modern city of Kairouan and is often visited in combination with the Great Mosque of Kairouan and other regional Islamic heritage sites.
What to See #
- Palace complex: Excavated palace remains include foundations and wall footings interpreted as part of the Aghlabid residential complex from the 9th century.
- Mosque and town remains: Ruins of a congregational mosque and associated urban remains show the layout of the town and its religious centre during the Aghlabid period.
- Archaeological museum: An on-site archaeological museum displays mosaics, carved stonework and artefacts recovered during excavations covering the site's occupation from the 9th century onwards.
