Ranthambore National Park
National Park Wildlife sanctuary in Rajasthan famed for Bengal tigers
Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan combines dry deciduous forest, lakes and the hilltop Ranthambore Fort; visitors arrive for guided safaris to see Bengal tigers, deer and resident birdlife.
Ranthambore National Park is a protected area in Sawai Madhopur district, Rajasthan, India, well known for its population of Bengal tigers and its mix of dry deciduous forest, scrub and rocky hills. The park includes a prominent hilltop fortress and a network of lakes and marshes that support rich wildlife.
The landscape features open plains and forest patches interspersed with rocky outcrops; this mosaic concentrates prey species and attracts large carnivores. Managed safari zones provide regulated access for wildlife viewing and conservation monitoring.
The Ranthambore Fort sits within the park and is a prominent historical feature visible from many parts of the reserve. The area has been subject to formal protection and wildlife management for several decades to conserve its tiger population and associated biodiversity.
The park lies in eastern Rajasthan near the town of Sawai Madhopur and is accessible by road and rail from Jaipur and other regional centres.
- Tiger viewing and safaris: The park is one of India's key tiger habitats and is managed with designated safari zones; early-morning drives often give the best chance to see tigers.
- Habitat and seasonality: Ranthambore combines forested terrain with open scrub and rocky hills, making wildlife easier to spot where animals concentrate around water in the dry season.
What to See #
- Ranthambore Fort: Ranthambore Fort, a large hilltop fortress within the park that dates to medieval and earlier periods and is visible from many safari routes.
- Lakes and marshes: Seasonal lakes, marshes and grassland patches that concentrate wildlife and are focal points for tiger and ungulate sightings.
- Safari and core zones: Core conservation zones divided into numbered safari zones for managed tourism and wildlife protection.

Tips for Visiting Ranthambore National Park #
- Book jungle safaris online through the Forest Department portal well in advance - major zones fill weeks ahead during winter (Oct-Mar).
- Choose the first-morning safari (6:30-9:30am) for the best chance to see tigers and to avoid the midday heat.
- Ask for Zone 1 (Tala) or Zone 3 (Jogi Mahal) for higher tiger-sighting odds; avoid zones with many large tourist vans.
- Bring binoculars and a small cloth to wipe camera lenses - dust from the dry scrub is relentless.
- If visiting Ranthambore Fort (inside the park), hire a local guide at the fort entrance for stories about its sieges and the 17th-century Rajput families.
