Ramree Island
Island Large Burmese island with mangroves and wartime history
Large island off Myanmar’s Rakhine coast with mangrove swamps and beaches; noted historically for a World War II battle and visited by those interested in coastal ecology.
Ramree Island is a large island off the coast of Rakhine State in western Myanmar, featuring extensive mangrove areas, tidal creeks and low-lying coastal plains.
The island is sparsely developed with villages and agricultural land; its coastal wetlands support wildlife typical of mangrove ecosystems. Ramree is historically notable for combat during the Second World War when Allied forces captured the island in 1945.
The island lies off the Rakhine coast in the Bay of Bengal and is reached from mainland Rakhine by boat or local transport; the nearest larger coastal centres on the mainland are the points of departure for ferries and boats to the island.
- Landscape: The island is characterised by tidal creeks, mangrove swamps and rural villages rather than large-scale tourism infrastructure.
