Rakata
Island Volcanic remnant of Krakatoa with steep cliffs
Rakata is a remnant cone of the Krakatoa complex in the Sunda Strait; boat trips and volcano historians visit to see the sheer volcanic cliffs and the area’s eruption history.
Rakata is a volcanic island in the Krakatoa group in the Sunda Strait, off the coast of Lampung, Indonesia. It is the surviving remnant of the pre-1883 Krakatoa volcanic cone.
A steep, rugged volcanic remnant with near-vertical cliffs that are visible from boats visiting the Krakatoa archipelago. The island itself has no permanent settlement and is encountered mainly on geological or island-hopping trips around Krakatoa.
Rakata was one of the main cones of the Krakatoa volcano prior to the catastrophic 1883 eruption; the eruption destroyed much of the central island complex and left Rakata as a prominent surviving feature. The archipelago has remained volcanically active since, with new cones forming in the caldera area.
Situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, the island is administratively part of Lampung province in Indonesia.
- Geological significance: Forms part of the Krakatoa archipelago in the Sunda Strait and is the surviving remnant of the pre-1883 Krakatoa volcanic cone.
