The Raja Ampat Islands are an archipelago off the northwest tip of New Guinea in Indonesia’s Southwest Papua, internationally renowned for extraordinarily rich marine biodiversity and world-class coral reef diving. The region is a global hotspot for reef species and a major destination for scuba divers and marine researchers.

Diving and snorkeling around steep reef walls, coral gardens and manta ray cleaning stations are the primary draws, with liveaboard boats commonly used to visit multiple sites across the archipelago. Many islands also feature karst islands, lagoons and sheltered bays explored by day trips and kayak excursions.

Local Papuan communities inhabit several of the main islands, and conservation initiatives and marine protected areas have been established to manage fisheries and tourism. The archipelago has attracted international attention from scientists and conservation groups due to its high species richness and endemism.

Raja Ampat lies off the Bird’s Head Peninsula of western New Guinea, with the regional hub of Sorong on the mainland used as the usual gateway for flights and boats into the archipelago.

  • Island count & biodiversity: The archipelago comprises well over a thousand small islands, cays and shoals and is renowned for some of the highest marine biodiversity on Earth.

What to See #

  • Waigeo: The largest island in the group with villages and access points for liveaboard dives and boat trips; it is often used as a base for exploring nearby reefs and islands.
  • Misool: An island group with extensive coral reefs and dive sites, known for manta ray cleaning stations and rich reef walls; popular among liveaboard itineraries.
  • Batanta: A largely wooded island with mangroves and coastal bays that form part of the archipelago's core island cluster and marine habitats.
  • Salawati: One of the principal islands in the archipelago lying between Waigeo and Misool, containing coastal reef systems and small communities.

How to Get to Raja Ampat Islands #

Raja Ampat is accessed from Sorong (West Papua/Southwest Papua) on the mainland. Fly into Domine Eduard Osok Airport (Sorong) from major Indonesian hubs, then take a public ferry or speedboat from Sorong harbor to Waisai (the main town in Raja Ampat); ferries and speedboats typically take a few hours (speedboats are faster). Many visitors arrange liveaboard trips or island-hopping charters from Sorong.

There are no roads between the islands and the mainland; once in Waisai or on an island, attractions are reached by short boat transfers and brief walks from landing points.

Tips for Visiting Raja Ampat Islands #

  • Use Sorong as your gateway and book inter-island transfers or a liveaboard in advance-ferry and speedboat schedules are limited and popular routes can sell out.
  • To avoid the busiest dive/snorkel sites, schedule early-morning or late-afternoon dives and consider a liveaboard that reaches outer reefs; day-trip operators concentrate on a handful of well-known sites, while liveaboards reach quieter spots.
  • If birding or remote island culture is a priority, include village stays on Waigeo or Misool and arrange specialist guides-the best bird-of-paradise sightings and quieter land-based experiences require targeted, pre-booked tours.
