Rabindra Sarobar Lake

Rabindra Sarobar is an artificial lake and landscaped urban park in south Kolkata, India, named after the poet Rabindranath Tagore. The site functions as a major recreational area offering walking paths, open green space and local sports facilities.

The park includes a central lake, tree-lined promenades, and pockets of wetland that attract waterbirds, and it is a popular place for jogging, morning exercise and informal boating. Local clubs and sports grounds lie alongside the park and support community events.

The lake and surrounding park were developed during the 20th century as part of Kolkata’s urban planning and recreational expansion, and the area has continued to be managed as a civic green space. It remains an important urban amenity for neighbourhood residents.

Rabindra Sarobar is located in the southern part of Kolkata, adjacent to the Tollygunge and Kalighat neighbourhoods, and is served by Rabindra Sarobar Metro station on Kolkata Metro Line.

• Sports and recreation areas: A sports and recreational complex and adjacent green areas that host local athletic events, jogging routes and community gatherings throughout the year.

Rabindra Sarobar (the lake and surrounding reserve) is in south Kolkata (Tollygunge area). The Kolkata Metro (Line 1, the oldest north-south line) stops at Rabindra Sarobar station; from the station it is a very short walk (a few minutes) to the lake and park paths. The area is also served by numerous city buses and cycle-rickshaws/auto-rickshaws; from central Kolkata (Esplanade) the drive is about 6-8 km and typically takes 20-35 minutes depending on traffic.

• Enter via the Rabindra Sarobar metro station for the most convenient access and plan an early‑morning visit to avoid peak local crowds and enjoy calmer lakeside views.
• Go at dawn to see active rowing clubs and birdlife-early mornings are where you'll find the best chance of spotting waterbirds and local rowers in action.
• Walk the park's quieter western trails and lotus ponds rather than staying on the main promenade; these sections are less frequented and offer more peaceful birdwatching and shade.
