The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata is a large white marble monument and museum built between 1906 and 1921 to commemorate the British monarch Queen Victoria. It combines British and Mughal architectural elements and now functions as a public museum and cultural complex.

Visitors can tour internal galleries that house paintings, manuscripts, sculptures and items from the colonial era, and stroll the formal gardens that frame the building. The memorial’s central dome and colonnaded wings form a dominant visual landmark beside Kolkata’s Maidan.

Construction was funded through public donations and supervised by architect William Emerson, with the museum later established to preserve historical collections related to the period. The site has since been managed as a public museum and cultural venue.

The memorial sits in central Kolkata adjacent to the Maidan greenspace and is accessible from the Esplanade and other central city areas.

Victoria Memorial is in central Kolkata on the Maidan at the eastern end of Jawaharlal Nehru Road (Chowringhee). It’s a short walk or taxi ride from Park Street/Esplanade - Esplanade metro station (North-South metro line) is roughly a 10-20 minute walk and many city buses run along Chowringhee to stops near the Memorial. Howrah Railway Station lies across the Hooghly River, about 3-4 km by road (a taxi or city bus ride away).

• Visit late afternoon toward sunset for soft light on the marble and pleasant views across the Maidan, then enter the museum galleries before closing to avoid peak picnic crowds on weekends.
• Buy your ticket at the main entrance and allow time for the indoor galleries-many tourists only photograph the exterior and miss the museum's British-era artefacts and paintings.
• Avoid busy public-holiday afternoons if you want a quieter stroll of the surrounding gardens and commemorative sculptures.
