Qutb Shahi tombs
Tomb Complex of royal tombs from Qutb Shahi dynasty
A funerary complex in Hyderabad built by the Qutb Shahi dynasty, with domed mausoleums and landscaped courtyards. Tourists study Persian-influenced stone architecture, carved details and garden layouts.
The Qutb Shahi tombs are a group of royal mausoleums in the Ibrahim Bagh area of Hyderabad, Telangana, built by the Qutb Shahi dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries. They form one of the largest royal necropolises in South India and are noted for their domed stone structures and carved ornamentation.
The complex presents a sequence of domed mausoleums set on raised platforms, with surviving decorative tile work and stone carving on facades, arches, and finials. Several tombs are surrounded by landscaped gardens and pathways that allow close viewing of the masonry and decorative details. Photographers and students of Islamic and Deccan architecture focus on the varied dome forms, the use of granite and plaster, and surviving tile fragments.
The tombs were constructed by successive rulers and members of the Qutb Shahi dynasty during the 16th and 17th centuries as burial monuments and expressions of royal patronage. Over the centuries the complex fell into periods of neglect and later conservation efforts have stabilized structures and restored garden layouts.
The site sits in the Ibrahim Bagh precinct near Golconda in western Hyderabad, within the metropolitan area of the city and accessible by road from central Hyderabad. It is close to other Golconda-era monuments and can be visited together with nearby historic sites.
