The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) is Brisbane’s primary public museum for modern and contemporary art, located at the South Bank cultural precinct. It forms part of the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) institution and focuses on contemporary visual culture, moving image and large-scale installations.

GOMA contains expansive gallery floors that host international touring exhibitions, major contemporary retrospectives and multimedia shows. It also houses a Children’s Art Centre that runs family programmes and interactive activities aimed at young audiences.

The gallery opened in the early 21st century as a purpose-built modern art facility and has since hosted a programme of major international artists and curated exhibitions, expanding Queensland’s capacity to present large-scale contemporary work.

Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) sits in Brisbane’s South Bank Cultural Precinct on Stanley Place. The easiest public-transit options are the CityCat ferry to the Cultural Centre ferry terminal (a 2-5 minute walk to GOMA) or the Brisbane suburban network to South Bank / South Brisbane stations (about a 5-10 minute walk through the park). Several bus routes stop on Grey Street/Stanley Street adjacent to the precinct.

By car GOMA is about 2-3 km south of the Brisbane CBD (follow Stanley Street/Coronation Drive toward South Bank); there is paid parking in the Cultural Centre precinct.

• Visit on a weekday morning right at or soon after opening to avoid the weekend and school-group crowds that peak in the afternoon.
• Enter from the Cultural Centre/Grey Street side (the South Bank cultural precinct) for the most direct access from South Brisbane/South Bank stations and the pedestrian bridges; this also puts you nearest to the main galleries and information desk.
• Check the GOMA website and front desk for timed-entry or ticketed special exhibitions and plan those first-many visitors skip the free gallery spaces and the riverside terrace/sculpture areas, which are quieter and worth a short detour.
