Overview - Quan Lan is an island in Quang Ninh province, northeastern Vietnam, forming part of the Bai Tu Long Bay archipelago and administered from Van Don district. It is a low-lying island with local villages, beaches, and small-scale tourism infrastructure.

Ferry connections from Cai Rong on the mainland provide the usual access route and seasonal boat services link the island to other spots in Bai Tu Long Bay.

History - Quan Lan has long been a fishing and maritime community; its role as a tourist destination has grown since the early 2000s with improved ferry links and small resort development. Traditional livelihoods such as fishing and boatbuilding remain visible alongside guesthouses and beach businesses.

Location - The island lies off the northeastern coast of Vietnam in Bai Tu Long Bay, roughly east of Ha Long and offshore from Van Don district in Quang Ninh province. The nearest mainland port is Cai Rong on Van Don.

What to See#

• Quan Lan Town / Ferry port: Located on the western edge of Bai Tu Long Bay, this is the main settlement and ferry gateway for the island group; passenger ferries connect here with Cai Rong (Van Don) on the mainland and journeys typically take under two hours depending on service.
• Minh Chau Beach: A stretch of sandy shoreline famous locally for swimming and sunbathing, with shallow water that warms in the dry season and is the island’s primary beach for day-trippers and small-scale resorts.

Quan Lạn (Quan Lan) is part of the Cái Rồng-Vân Đồn island group in Quảng Ninh. The usual route is to drive or take bus/car from Hà Nội to Cái Rồng (Cai Rong) port in Vân Đồn (the road route via National Highway 18 takes roughly 3.5-4 hours by car from Hà Nội depending on traffic). Ferries and speedboats run from Cái Rồng port to Quan Lạn - the crossing is around 30-60 minutes depending on vessel type.

You can also fly to Vân Đồn International Airport and then drive to Cái Rồng port for the ferry. Once on Quan Lạn island most beaches and guesthouses are a short walk or a brief motorbike ride from the ferry landing.

• Take one of the morning ferries from the Van Don/Cai Rong area to Quan Lan to avoid choppy seas and day-trip congestion-early arrivals also secure the quieter stretches of Minh Chau beach at sunrise.
• Plan at least one night on Quan Lan (Minh Chau or Quan Lan town) rather than returning the same day; the island is much quieter after the afternoon day-trippers leave and you can enjoy dawn and dusk on the beaches.
• Explore beyond the main beach: small fishing villages and the interior of the island are often overlooked by day visitors and give a better sense of local island life and quieter swimming spots.
