Qomolangma National Park
National Park Protected area encompassing Mount Everest and surrounding peaks
On the Tibetan side of Mount Everest, Qomolangma National Park encompasses high-altitude terrain, glacier approaches and Tibetan villages. Expeditions, high-altitude trekking and cultural visits to Sherpa communities draw climbers and researchers.
How to Get to Qomolangma National Park #
Most access to the park is from the Tibet Autonomous Region. International visitors typically fly into Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA) or land in mainland China and travel overland; from Lhasa it is a multi-day drive via Shigatse and Tingri to the Everest region. Entry requires a Tibet Travel Permit plus any regional or park permits-these are arranged through licensed tour operators in China/Tibet. On the north side the last settled stop is usually Shigatse or Tingri before ascending to high camps and Rongbuk.
Tips for Visiting Qomolangma National Park #
- Arrange a Tibet Travel Permit and a local guide through a licensed tour operator well in advance-independent travel to the Tibetan plateau is restricted.
- If heading to the north (Rongbuk) side of Everest, acclimatize in Lhasa or Shigatse for several days before ascending to high camps-the north base camp sits above 5,000 m.
- Expect extreme altitude; carry pulse oximeter, acetazolamide if prescribed, and allow several days for gradual ascent.
- Bring hard copies of permit pages and extra fuel/food-services outside county towns are minimal.
Best Time to Visit Qomolangma National Park #
Best visited in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) when weather windows are most reliable; winter is severe and summer monsoon brings heavy precipitation and cloud.
