How to Get to Qomolangma National Park #

Most access to the park is from the Tibet Autonomous Region. International visitors typically fly into Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA) or land in mainland China and travel overland; from Lhasa it is a multi-day drive via Shigatse and Tingri to the Everest region. Entry requires a Tibet Travel Permit plus any regional or park permits-these are arranged through licensed tour operators in China/Tibet. On the north side the last settled stop is usually Shigatse or Tingri before ascending to high camps and Rongbuk.

Tips for Visiting Qomolangma National Park #

  • Arrange a Tibet Travel Permit and a local guide through a licensed tour operator well in advance-independent travel to the Tibetan plateau is restricted.
  • If heading to the north (Rongbuk) side of Everest, acclimatize in Lhasa or Shigatse for several days before ascending to high camps-the north base camp sits above 5,000 m.
  • Expect extreme altitude; carry pulse oximeter, acetazolamide if prescribed, and allow several days for gradual ascent.
  • Bring hard copies of permit pages and extra fuel/food-services outside county towns are minimal.
